Carmody Irish Pub

Carmody Irish Pub is a popular meeting place at 308 E. Superior Street. Tonight they featured Joseph Gomer, a Tuskegee Airman with the first in a series known as History in a Pint, which is sponsored by the Veteran’s Memorial Hall. (The Tuskegee Airmen were America’s first black military airmen.) The men walking on the street are just coming out of the pub and are Veteran’s for Peace.

According to the Carmody website the pub is in a building which served as the livery stable for the block. This section of town is know as the Port-town district. The pub has a nautical and Irish theme. You can see the ships coming in from their back windows.

Today the weather has been very mild for February in Duluth.  I saw water standing in sidewalks.

Old Stone Building

This building on the 300 block in the alley between East First Street and East Second Street. It is behind the alley of the First Presbyterian  The old stones are very interesting.  I have heard tell that it is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Duluth and that at one time it was a jail.  I am sure it is one of the oldest buildings, but I don’t know if it is true that it was a jail.

Seven Bridges Road

This sign marks Seven Bridges Road which is actually across the street. This street is Superior Street and a bridge over the Lester River.  Seven Bridges Road is a beautiful road. According to Mark Ryan in his website “Duluth Minnesota’s Seven Bridge Road: Samuel Snively and the Building of a Northern Minnesota Seven Bridges Road is one of the more beautiful parkways in Duluth Winding its way through forests of pine and birch, the lower portion of the road intertwines with Amity creek, the western branch of the Lester River, as the waterway descends toward Lake Superior.   Along the way, the parkway crosses several beautifully crafted stone-arch bridges, all similar in design and construction. As you can see, snow was flurrying around today.

Aerial Lift Bridge Repair

From a City of Duluth press release:

Winter work will also result in occasional single-lane vehicle traffic over the bridge. Stop signal lights will be
utilized at each end of the bridge to facilitate the one-way traffic.

These closures are necessary to continue setup of the scaffold and platform system which is to be used in the
upcoming repainting of the bridge towers and repair of structural steel elements.

Crews will be preparing the scaffold and platform system which is to be used in the upcoming repainting of the
bridge towers and the repair of structural steel elements.

The City thanks residents for their patience and cooperation.

Sun setting

Today when I went out shortly after 5 p.m. I was struck by the fact that is was still light outside. The days are getting longer in Duluth. This photo was taken a 5:10 p.m. Just a couple months ago it was dark at 4:30 p.m.  It was actually lighter than this photo looks.
